Plant of the Month - May

As we head into May and the days become warmer and longer we turn our focus to the colourful stars of the summer garden. Summer bedding plants. Last May we covered how to plant up your hanging baskets and our favourite basket plants, which you can read here. This month we will turn our attention to some of the new colours and varieties available in this year’s range, which are all grown on our on-site nursery.

Asteriscus Golden Dollar` is a trailing plant with coin-like, golden yellow flowers and dark green foliage. It grows up to 15cm (6") high and spreads to 30cm (12") wide.

Coleus Chilli Pepper. This variety has stunning leaf colour and patterns which thrive in full sun and shade. Low-maintenance, high-impact plants are perfect for containers or placing in the border. Its uniquely coloured and shaped leaves add texture in the garden and containers.

Petunia 'GoTunia Cosmic pink. Forms a neat, compact plant simply smothered in a profusion of pink flowers. Flowering from early summer, it provides fabulous long-lasting colour all through the warmest months in pots and hanging baskets.

Petunia Gotunia Tiger Stripe. A bright yellow-black pattern makes this variety unique. These tiger look flowers appear in early spring.

Petunia Bee's Knees is filled with lush blooms and puts on a high-impact show all season long with very little attention. It brings the most intense yellow petunia to the market, along with the best performance. This variety holds its yellow colour better than any other yellow petunia.

Along with all of these new varieties we also grow a wide range of pack bedding plants on site include all the favourites, Lobelia, French Marigold, Petunia and many more.

Also grown on our nursery this year are tomato plants. We have many varieties including Tumbler which is ideal for hanging baskets and Totem which grows into a compact plant not requiring stacking or removal of side shoots.

To get the best out of your summer bedding plants feed them regularly, we recommend a general feed such as miracle gro. They will also require regular watering in hot spells, we would also suggest keeping some frost fleece to hand just in case the nights turn colder as it is still possible to have frosts till the end of this month.
