Plant of the Month - June

Well that's the Chelsea flower show over for another year. We saw new plant launches, medals and the usual spring garden designer's favourites such as geraniums foxgloves and alliums. For June's plant of the month we are going to look at some personal favourites of our Plant area team.

James - At this time of year my favourite plants are the colourful early summer flowering perennials.

Geranium Rozanne, A vigorous spreading perennial to 60cm tall, with neat, dense, lobed, marbled and flecked mid-green leaves boasting saucer-shaped violet-blue flowers 5cm wide, veined purple, with a white centre, opening from early Summer to early Autumn. Shortlisted for the Chelsea Plant of the Centenary for the decade 1993-2002, and winner of the public vote.

Geum Totally Tangerine, is a peachy-orange flowered cultivar noted for its long flowering season from late Spring to Autumn. It reaches a height of 90cm.

Salvia Caradonna, is a perennial cultivar with upright racemes of violet- purple flowers through the Summer above narrow, rough, grey-green leaves.

Fuchsias are Cliff's Summer favourites from the Summer flowering bush types in containers to the trailing baskets varieties, Cliff has grown many different varieties, and favours hardy fuchsias as these will come back year after year. His top three picks are

Mrs Popple, a vigorous upright shrub with small, dark green leaves. Single Flowers, with bright red sepals and tube and violet-purple petals.

Tom Thumb, is a dwarf deciduous shrub with small single flowers with short red sepals and tube, complete with mauve-purple petals.

Genii is a bushy upright shrub growing up to 60cm tall with mid green leaves. From early Summer to Autumn it bears large, double flowers with crimson-red tube and sepals and burgundy-red corolla which are lighter at the base.

Denise loves roses and grows many varieties in her own garden. Denise likes David Austin roses with their improved disease resistance and range of colourful blooms which include some scented varieties. Her top three varieties are

Wisley, the perfect rosette flowers are shallowly cupped, about 3” across, and are a very pure light pink. The outer petals pale prettily towards the edges. The growth is elegantly arching, producing its flowers along the stems and building up into a fine, vigorous shrub.

Kew gardens, single flowers held in very large heads, rather like a hydrangea, produced almost continuously from early Summer into Autumn. Soft apricot buds open to pure white, with a hint of soft lemon behind the stamens. It is extremely healthy and almost thorn less. The growth is bushy and rather upright.

Lady of Shallot displays rich orange-red buds opening into chalice-shaped blooms, filled with loosely arranged, orange petals. The surrounding outer petals are salmon-pink with beautifully contrasting golden-yellow undersides. There is a pleasant, warm tea fragrance, with hints of spiced apple and cloves. It quickly forms a bushy shrub with slightly arching stems and mid-green leaves, which have attractive, slightly bronzed tones when young.

Lisa's favourite plants are also traditional garden perennials;

Salvia Marvel, reaching only about 30cm (1ft) in height, the upright stems are topped by crowded, 10-12cm (4-5in) spikes of deep blue flowers, each with a little white on the lower lip. Flowering should begin in June and continue into October.

Agapanthus Fireworks, A compact, evergreen perennial to around 60cm tall with glossy, strap-shaped foliage. Rounded umbels of upright white buds open to bicoloured, hanging, trumpet-shaped flowers with white, flaring petal tips and rich purple-blue bases.

Hosta June. A compact, clump-forming perennial with ovate grey-green leaves, matt above and glaucous below. Produces pale purple flowers in late summer. Leaves develop a large golden-yellow centre and have irregular margins of blue, with pale blue-green streaking.
