Plant of the Month - February 2024

For February plant of the month, we look at one of our favourite early flowering shrubs. The Camellia is available in several different shade of pink, white, red, or yellow. These are always a popular plant as they have big bold flowers in the early part of the year.

To perform their best, they require acidic soil which for most of our customers means growing in a large pot with ericaceous compost. Most importantly, using rainwater is essential as our local water is very alkaline. We would also recommend feeding with an ericaceous feed.

Three of our favourite varieties include:

Camelia Lady Campbell

This variety is a strong growing plant with an abundance of bright, rosy, red flowers between January and February set of against evergreen shinny leaves. Grows up to 2m in height and width.

Camellia Silver Anniversary

Like all Camelia, this is an attractive large flowering shrub in January and February with attractive, large double silvery white flowers.

Camelia Donation

Camelia Donation is a larger flowering camelia growing up to 4m, with semi, double light rose flowers.
